Ahom Dynasty at a Glance
The Ahom kingdom (1228-1826) was one of the longest-running dynasties in Indian history. For nearly 600 years, the Ahoms ruled present-day Assam, successfully defending against Mughal invasions 17 times.
Key Rulers to Remember
Sukaphaa (1228-1268): Founder. Led the Ahoms from Mong Mao to Assam in 1228. Set up his first capital at Charaideo.
Rudra Singha (1696-1714): Golden period of Ahom rule — great builder, diplomat, and military leader.
Lachit Borphukan: Most celebrated Ahom commander. Won the Battle of Saraighat (1671) against Mughal forces. His birth anniversary (24 November) is celebrated as Lachit Diwas.
The Battle of Saraighat (1671)
This naval battle on the Brahmaputra river near Guwahati was a defining moment in Assamese history. Mughal forces under Ram Singh I were decisively defeated by Lachit Borphukan despite being outnumbered.
